The province of Ogliastra is on the island of Sardinia, in the island's most mountainous area, one of Italy's least populated. In 2016 the province was 'suppressed', with all the local municipalities except one joining the Nuoro province while the town of Seui joined the new Province of South Sardinia. In the past Sardinia exported coal, zinc, iron, silver, lead, granite and bauxite, which supported the local iron, steel, shipbuilding, metals, chemical and petrochemical sectors. The whole of Italy has suffered from the global financial crisis, but this region in particular has seen very slow growth since 2008, with associated high unemployment and a low per capita GDP, much less than the Italian average. Just under 78% of people there are employed in the service sector, around 15% in the industrial sector and the remaining 6.8% in agriculture, mainly sheep farming and sheep products. Newer industries playing a part in reviving the region include international trade, public sector, high tech and tourism, mainly on the north coast.
